**The Walker County Extension Service offered our first Master Gardener Class for the Spring of 2001. There were 14 participants for our first offering of the
Master Gardener Program. We met at the Walker County Extension Office on Hwy 75 North. These classes met on Thursday afternoons and lasted a minimum of
4 hours per day. During the training sessions, we had guest lecturers come in and work with the group plus local agents presenting the training. In addition to the
classroom activities, we went on several field trips to locations at Texas A&M University and local horticultural operations. We had FUN!
Trainees were required to receive a minimum of 50 hours of instruction, pass an examination administered by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service (now Texas
Cooperative Extension) and volunteer 50 hours of volunteer service (within the next year) to earn the title of Texas Master Gardener. In order to retain the Texas
Master Gardener title, individuals are required every 2 years to participate in 12 hours of recertification training and provide an additional 12 hours of volunteer
service.
We are in the process of gathering names of potential trainees for the 2002 class. We do have to have at least 12 or more participants to make the class. Current
plans do not limit participation to only Walker County residents. Individuals from surrounding counties without Master Gardener programs will receive high
priority along with our county residents. The Master Gardener program is designed to allow an individual to gain valuable horticultural knowledge and then
return/repay their knowledge gains through volunteer efforts coordinated by the County Extension Office.

are doing and learn more about the state program.
Learn and Return! Join us for the Walker County, Master Composter Class. The first training session was May 22 & 23rd,
2000. Our second class was held in October. Classes were held at the Walker County Extension Office. Participants enjoyed
14 hours of instruction. Each person completing the training is asked to return 40 hours of volunteer work to the program.
Planed activities include: setting up (4) demonstration sites throughout the county. The first site is located at the Walker
County Extension Office (see photo). Also check out the composting link further down this page.
If you have an environmental event or activity which would be suitable for an educational display on composting or waste
recycling please give us a call. We would be glad to work with you.
We will offer an additional teachers training for those interested in utilizing Composting Curriculum with their students (great
recycling, environmental, science type stuff). More to follow.......
